In light of the raging Covid-19 pandemic and the brutal 2nd wave this year, the CBSE board was forced to cancel the board exams this year. The announcement of cancellation of exams created a lot of confusion, panic and became the reason of much worry among the students. Their apprehensions were well justified as there is a large section of students who believe in keeping their reserves of hard work for the days just before commencement of the term-end exam. Having said that, we do not condone the use of this strategy ever, as it can backfire—which was clearly the case this year—nonetheless, students who had remained consistent with their performance throughout the year looked at the situation more positively.

To avoid such situations and keeping the fact of a mutating virus, the authorities of the CBSE board have decided to come up with a new assessment plan for grades X and XII board exams to be held in 2022. Under the new assessment program, the academic session will be divided into two terms; to put it simply, the syllabus will be split into two terms for both the classes. The first term exams will be held in November-December, and the second/final term exams will be scheduled in March-April.

Interestingly, under this particular scheme, the assessment board will follow a systemic approach in understanding the students’ ability to assess and use the interconnectivity of concepts and topics studied. For this purpose, the syllabus will be bifurcated into two parts. For the First Term exams, the pattern would involve Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) including assertion-reasoning MCQs along with case-based MCQs. The duration for this type of exam is set for 90 minutes, since it will only cover 50 percent of the entire syllabus. Moreover, there are no fixed dates, the exams would be conducted in a flexible schedule.

The students are required to give their responses in OMR sheets which will be scanned and uploaded at the CBSE portal or the schools may upload the marks based on their evaluation.

The year-end exams or Term 2 will be in subjective format and the duration for this exam will be 2 hours. There will be different question types, hence the students could expect case-based, situation-based, open-ended short answers or long answers. Again, this term will cover 50 percent of the remaining syllabus and will be held in March-April 2022 at the examination centers fixed by the board.

In the event of a severe spread of the virus, like which we witnessed in April and May this year, a 90-minute MCQ-based exam will be conducted at the end of term 2 also.

As there is a lot of uncertainty around the pandemic, and we do not know how things will evolve over the next few months, it is advisable for students to keep up their performance levels right from the beginning of the session, so that their scores do not take nosedive.

This seems to be a practical system to evaluate students’ performance throughout the year. Another plus point of the scheme is that students are relieved of the burden to mug up loads and loads of information at the end of the term. The idea of dividing and spreading the exams in two terms will keep the morale of the student high and make his learning experience more fruitful and effective.

There is no doubt about the fact that colleges in the US are expensive, thus, it is essential to have an open and clear discussion with your parents, to get a fair idea about how much funds they can allocate to your education. Even if you feel that you belong to the upper-class, we still advise you to have this pertinent discussion to know where you stand, what are your chances and how you should approach your college application process.

Having said that, I strongly urge you to not pursue scholarships, if your parents are in a position to afford the entire cost of the education. The reason for this is quite simple – like all businesses, colleges, too, need revenue to operate and keep them running. Beyond their role of disseminating knowledge, colleges have to be well-equipped with research labs, on-campus hostels and hospitals, conference rooms, auditoriums, grounds for sports, equipment and technology for different kinds of activities, etc., and all that infrastructure costs money. If they don’t get the funds from students, how will they run and provide students up-to-date training? Please understand that a college is similar to any business house looking to profit and generate revenue.

For a broader perspective, let me explain how admission officers segregate applications. All received applications will be categorized into two piles – one as ‘Paid’ (where the student is willing to pay) and the other as ‘Free’ (where the student will be seeking scholarship). Now, we also have to take into account that the university is not only getting applications from Indian students but from students across the globe. And if a student with a similar profile as yours is willing to pay, as a businessman, you would also give preference to his/her application than the one seeking financial aid. Therefore, in order to avoid this situation, a student must refrain from seeking financial assistance if he/she can afford the education and living cost.

The thing about scholarships is that, this provision is instituted for those who deserve and truly need help. Moreover, due to the recent pandemic—Covid-19, colleges have been hit hard as many students with offers in hand chose to stay back in their country or requested for deferrals. This has put the colleges in a precarious scenario wherein, they cannot hand out many scholarships and have pulled the strings on financial aid to curb losses. 

However, if you are intellectually gifted but not from an upper-class background, accessing higher education from reputed colleges may seem improbable. In this scenario, I’d suggest not to let your financial limitations cripple you from achieving your far-fetched dream. I would rather assure you that, ‘Scholarships’ are meant especially for students such as yourself, and your household income should neither determine your ambition nor limit your educational pursuits. One of the most important benefits of scholarship for society is that it gives us scientists, doctors, engineers, lawyers and many more professionals from backgrounds of limited means. Apart from filling positions that would have otherwise remained empty, having more people in these professions helps in building a better society. 

A little extra work for attaining scholarships will go a long way as winning a scholarship will put you in close proximity to mentors who will help you get the maximum benefit of the program. Moreover, you’ll be able to network with people who have been awarded a similar scholarship in the same academic field. 

And, of course, if you are one of those who need a scholarship, you must pick one carefully. For this, first, ensure that you meet the benchmark required. Never should you assume that because you are at a disadvantage, you won’t get the scholarship and simply don’t apply for it. It does you little harm to apply for a scholarship that you don’t receive than not applying for it altogether. Take your chance and apply, but only if need be.

  • Earn Credits – AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). If a student earns a 3 or higher, s/he is eligible to receive course credits, advanced placement or both upon arriving at college.

  • Students are Challenged– Since AP classes are highly rigorous and demanding, students would be intellectually stimulated which is unlikely in regular high-school study.

  • Increase Admission Chances– Students coming with good high-school record along with AP scores adds the oomph factor and immediately catches the attention of the admission officers. A score above 3 in APs signals to the admissions team that the student is ready for the pressures of college curriculum.

  • Easy Access to Scholarships– AP courses and exam scores help the students qualify for scholarships easily.

Before students enroll for AP classes however, it is crucial to consider whether the student will be able to carry the extra burden or not. Like mentioned above, the curriculum of an AP course is equivalent to undergraduate college courses, it may not be suitable for some students due to the demands of the course. Thus, it is advisable to consider the following points:

  • Past Performance in the Subject – If a student excels in science, taking AP Chemistry would be a great idea. But, if the student tends to struggle with Mathematics, taking AP Calculus will be too much of an ordeal and hence one is recommended notto take it.

  • Student’s Capacity – AP courses in humanities–English, Psychology, Philosophy, History, etc.– require extensive amounts of reading and writing thus it’s important to consider whether the student would be able to devote time to long, difficult reading assignments, essays, and in-depth research papers. Incapacity to handle too many things will be counter-productive hence refrain from it. 

  • Schedule – A student active in sports or other extra-curricular activities may find it challenging to simultaneously meet the obligations of an AP class so, think cautiously before joining.

  • GPA should NOT be Compromised – No student is recommended to take an AP course if s/he thinks it might lower the overall GPA. While the admissions team wants to see how a student performs in taxing courses, their priority is to see strong grades. Under no circumstances should a student compromise with his/her GPA scores.

It is to be noted by students that you can get access to the complete list of AP courses at The College Board website. Students can also ask their school counsellors about AP classes available at school and can choose to take two to five AP classes during their high school years. However, looking at the depth and intensiveness of the course, the student should take no more than two AP courses per year. Striking a balance between work and play is essential. Taking too many classes can scuttle your social life and cause extreme anxiety, which we certainly do not want. 

High AP score (anything between 3-5) might exempt you from certain general education or prerequisite classes. However, exemptions depend from college to college, as receiving a 3 on your AP Chemistry might qualify you at some schools, while others might require a 5. 3)    Take Exam in September-October: The best months to appear for the exam are September and October because the applications for the PG program start in December and January. Giving the exam a bit early provides the student with an advantage of reappearing for the test in case of a low score in the first attempt.

 

Preparation Time:       


A minimum of 3-4 months of preparation is essential for GRE though not mandatory. It depends on the students’ caliber. But if a student feels he needs help, then he may choose to join an institute that shall help him polish his concepts and provide him with an environment to clarify doubts. 


Important Points:


1.     Validity: The GRE test is valid for five years, and a student can choose to give as many tests as he wants with a gap of minimum 21 days.


2.     Number of Attempts: A student can choose to send the best score from the tests he may have given.


3.    Ideal Score: A student should aim to score a minimum of 310 to get into good universities but if the student is eyeing for Ivy Leagues or Pedigree then s/he should aim above 320.

In the light of the pandemic and rising COVID positive cases in India, the government has decided to cancel class X exams and postponed Class XII Board exams. The fresh dates for class XII exams will be announced on or after June 1, 2021 (after assessment of the situation). While some cheer with delight, others are not so happy about it. Students who were planning to study abroad after finishing their high-school seem to have an additional apprehension on how they would submit their scores in time, especially where conditional offers apply.

Their heightened sense of worry is understandable and justified, as things look a bit uncertain at this time. Since the academic sessions in most of the popular destinations such as the US, UK, Canada, etc., begin in the month of September/October, students are normally expected to submit their documents and complete all formalities by May. But, with the delay in exams, it appears that they would not be able to submit their final year scores in time and it might affect their admittance to the universities applied. Need not worry.

Though the situation is challenging, countries like the US, UK, Canada, etc. have extended relaxations to students for the academic session which is to begin in the month of September/October this year. Also, because foreign students form the major chunk of their classes, universities would not let go of Indian students—since they are an important asset to these universities. Hence, the students are advised not to panic, rather focus their energies on preparing for the exams ahead. 

It has also been observed that the universities, at times, provide conditional offers to students and confirm their admittance only after Board exam results. With the delay in exams, the results are expected to get delayed, which means that students would be able to submit these documents only later. However, there are some universities which might ask you for your first-term and mid-term grades to evaluate your performance and give you an extension based on it before allowing you to submit your final scorecard later. Given the current circumstances and prevalence of the ongoing pandemic, the universities will be flexible in the application procedure this year; they will push forward their decision and admission timelines.

However, some of the universities follow a direct offer system which is not heavily based on grades, with those universities you should not have a problem as they are well aware of the problems students are going through this year. All things considered the impact is not as severe as one would think. In any case, IB and IGCSE students normally take their exams from May-July. While the students studying in IB schools rejoice on the cancellation of the exam this year, for the students of the IGCSE board the admission process remains the same. As far as students of the IB board are concerned, their annual performance would be taken into account. Given the availability of this facility for the students studying in these Boards, students giving CBSE exams can request an extension on submission of XII report card.

Further, it would give some respite to your nerves to know that, according to statistics, roughly about 7.50 lakh Indian students study abroad every year, with 1.90 lakh pursuing their higher education from universities in the US alone. The education sector relies heavily on international students in these countries, and, therefore, they would not want to lose out on incoming students.

In a nutshell, students must not get anxious about the postponed Board exams and, be rest assured that most of the universities and colleges have relaxed requirements and made additional accommodations to suit the needs of the incoming batch in the wake of the pandemic.

1. Start working on your application early

Application in the US universities or colleges is a time-consuming process thus, a student must start the work early, say at least one year before. The admission requirements of each institution differ hence, it must be prepared carefully and with concentration. Half-hearted presentation would lower your chances of admission, so steer clear of that.

Collecting ‘Recommendation Letters’ from your school teachers/college professors and preparing Essays or Personal Statement takes a lot of time. Moreover, you would also have to give SAT/GRE/GMAT exams along with the English proficiency test – TOEFL. 1.      Listen To Music That Makes You Want To Sing –Many of you may not know that that singing is as fun an activity as listening to your favorite music. While listening to your favorite numbers make sure that you sing along a few lines. It reduces the effects of stress and releases endorphins associated with pleasure. Trust me, you will derive as much pleasure as I do (and let me tell you, I’m not even a good bathroom singer…)

2.    Manage Time Appropriately – Plan your day according to what you wish to accomplish during the day. Try keeping 3-4 activities at the max, and keep ticking the list as you complete your goals one by one. Keeping a small diary at all times helps, but if that’s not possible then post your day’s goals on a pin board. 

While studying it’s crucial to take breaks after every 40-50 minutes. Do not study for longer stretches at a time, as the concentration level drops after 40 minutes of rigorous study. So, let’s say if you’re planning to complete one chapter, break it into 2-3 slots of forty minutes each. If you can follow this practice for a week, I assure you that you’ll see the difference in your progress. 

3.      Sleep For At Least Seven Hours Every Day – Sleeping and waking at the same time every day reduces the effects of stress, more so, if you sleep a minimum of seven hours. Thus, plan your day in such a way that you keep aside a minimum of seven hours for sleep.

And two minutes before sleeping, while you are lying down, you must practice positive affirmations to calm your nerves down and banish all the unease from your system.

Some of the‘ positive affirmations’ that you could use are:

i.   I am confident that I will do well in exams.

ii.  I am working hard and will continue my efforts to perform well.

iii. I’m thoroughly enjoying the process of learning; it is meaningful and fun. 

4.      Eat With Your Family -Though this might seem a little difficult in today’s time, yet taking time out and enjoying a couple of meals together in a week can really work wonders for your mental development. It's a good time to build bonds, talking about your hobbies or discussing your day with your parents or siblings and asking them about theirs is rejuvenating. Sharing your problems on the table will help you unburden yourself and you might also find solutions to whatever it might be that’s bothering you.

Also, make sure that you do not eat on the run. Though once in a while is okay, but it should NOT be the norm.

5.      Exercise Regularly and Get Some Sun –Take out 30 minutes at least 5 times a week to get some physical exercise; it could be running, jogging, walking, biking, or playing a sport of your choice. Frequency is more important than intensity so, remain consistent with a 5-day rule.

While you are pursuing any activity you will be exposed to sunlight. It’s good for you. Just in case, if you are taking an indoor activity then make sure that you get at least 10-15 minutes of sun during the day. Sunshine has a positive effect on the mind and body, so I suggest you take your chat sessions [via phone or personal] with your friends basking in the sun.

Under the pressure of choosing the right career, students get confused among many courses and also get scared whether they are choosing the right one or not. In this case, they need proper counseling so that they can identify their interest and get all the proper details about the courses. Engineering is overhyped in India but there are various other interesting courses available for PCM students. 

Here is a list of top career options for PCM students :

  • Engineering courses (B.E. and B.tech.)

Mostly, students choose engineering as their career choice simply because of the image and value associated with it. But this is not the right criteria to choose. In order to pursue a career in the engineering field, an individual must have completed their high-school with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) along with a minimum aggregate of 50% at the HSC level. 

The popular branches of engineering are Computer Science, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, IT, Agricultural, and Petroleum. IIT-JEE Entrance Exam needs to be cleared in order to get the admission in the top-ranked IITs. Bachelor of engineering/bachelor of technology is an undergraduate program of 4-years.

  • Bachelor in Pharmacy

Pharmacists are in a massive demand in the medicinal field. In this course, students will learn about the detailed information of chemical structure, function, combination, uses, and preparation of the medicines. B. Pharm is a four-year job- oriented undergraduate program. An individual can open his own pharmacy after becoming a licensed practitioner. Pharmacists can also choose to work in Hospitals, Clinics, Medical Writings, Drug Research & Development etc.

  • Commercial Pilot course

Are you interested in adventurous life and own a calculative and highly analytical mind, then you should look forward toward becoming a commercial pilot. You can opt this course via Government College at reasonable fees whereas you can choose private colleges too, but they are quite expensive. For enrolment in this course, a candidate should have a minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Pilot training consists of ground training and flying training and a fitness certificate from designated medical practitioners.

  • Architecture (B.Arch.)

If you are interested in building structures and designing, then B.Arch. is the perfect career option for you. It’s a combination of art and science which includes planning, implementing and construction of the housing structures. With the development of the county, there are a lot of opportunities for architects today and they can find employment in both private as well as government sectors.

The Architect designs and restores the buildings such as residential buildings, malls, restaurants, complexes, etc. Through this course, you will learn various aspects like interior design, landscape architecture, construction management, rural and urban planning, building architecture, transportation planning, etc. The duration of this course is 5 years and a candidate can appear in the National Aptitude Test in Architecture which is conducted by the council of architecture. 

  • Bachelor in Computer Applications (B.C.A.)

Some of you might not be interested in engineering but love computer programming and other things. In this case, you can go for a bachelor's degree in Computer Application. This course is a 3 year undergraduate program. If you have strong command over programming languages then, you can work as a system analyst, web designer, software developer, database administrator, app developer, etc., and this course offers good opportunities abroad too.

  • Career in Defence

Defence is one of the most prestigious career and entails a huge number of opportunities for those who wish to lead adventurous lives. The three branches of defence are the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. NDA is conducted twice a year in two stages: written exam and SSB Interview. Air Force & Navy requires Class 12/HSC passed with Physics and Mathematics 

The candidate should choose their career according to their interests and consider all the details of the course like employability, salary, benefits, prospects, and growth opportunities. Competition is getting tougher nowadays due to which students are more confused about their career choices. In recent years, students are becoming more concerned about their education and believe in choosing their passion as a career.
