It has been decided by the board authorities that there will be two terms conducted at the end of each semester. The marks obtained would be aggregated at the end of the 2nd and final term which is to be conducted in March-April 2022. The system may sound simple, better and even easy for many students, nonetheless, there is a section of students who would have to embrace themselves for a busier year than the usual board year. And there are a couple of reasons for that.

All students aiming to apply for Undergraduate courses in the US, UK and Canada will first have to accept that it’s not going to be an easy year for them, and that they would have to adhere to timelines dearly, else their application may not make it in time. Thus, adapting to this new system and process is their only choice.

For students applying to the US, the process of early application and early decision (which takes place in early November) as well as regular applications(for which the deadlines vary from university to university, but for most it’s 1st January) was very simple and uncomplicated as, students had time to prepare supplementary essays for the universities they are applying to. But with the 1st term now taking place in November-December, students will not only have to prepare for their board exams, but will have to simultaneously devote time to their applications and essays. In short, applicants would not get any breather before their board exams, considering both—the application and preparation of Board Exams—are equally important. Needless to say, students will have to learn the art of time management to excel in both.

Moreover, colleges will expect exact scores rather than the predicted ones along with your mid-term results (that used to be used until last year) to be submitted, assuming the scores would come out by the start of registration time in January-February. For the UK and Canada also, the process is not going to be very different as their application deadline is 15th January. Thus, it goes without saying that students would have to ensure all their application essays are ready by then.

Considering the changes, it’s essential for all applicants to start preparing their essays early on to save themselves from any last-minute hassles. But more importantly, all students need to pull up their socks right from the beginning of XII grade and be very cautious about it. There is absolutely no space for any mishaps or slip-ups, especially for students eyeing foreign admissions.

Even if you feel that you belong to the upper-class, we still advise you to have this pertinent discussion to know where you stand, what are your chances and how you should approach your college application process.

Having said that, I strongly urge you to not pursue scholarships, if your parents are in a position to afford the entire cost of the education. The reason for this is quite simple – like all businesses, colleges, too, need revenue to operate and keep them running. Beyond their role of disseminating knowledge, colleges have to be well-equipped with research labs, on-campus hostels and hospitals, conference rooms, auditoriums, grounds for sports, equipment and technology for different kinds of activities, etc., and all that infrastructure costs money. If they don’t get the funds from students, how will they run and provide students up-to-date training? Please understand that a college is similar to any business house looking to profit and generate revenue.

For a broader perspective, let me explain how admission officers segregate applications. All received applications will be categorized into two piles – one as ‘Paid’ (where the student is willing to pay) and the other as ‘Free’ (where the student will be seeking scholarship). Now, we also have to take into account that the university is not only getting applications from Indian students but from students across the globe. And if a student with a similar profile as yours is willing to pay, as a businessman, you would also give preference to his/her application than the one seeking financial aid. Therefore, in order to avoid this situation, a student must refrain from seeking financial assistance if he/she can afford the education and living cost.

The thing about scholarships is that, this provision is instituted for those who deserve and truly need help. Moreover, due to the recent pandemic—Covid-19, colleges have been hit hard as many students with offers in hand chose to stay back in their country or requested for deferrals. This has put the colleges in a precarious scenario wherein, they cannot hand out many scholarships and have pulled the strings on financial aid to curb losses.

However, if you are intellectually gifted but not from an upper-class background, accessing higher education from reputed colleges may seem improbable. In this scenario, I’d suggest not to let your financial limitations cripple you from achieving your far-fetched dream. I would rather assure you that, ‘Scholarships’ are meant especially for students such as yourself, and your household income should neither determine your ambition nor limit your educational pursuits. One of the most important benefits of scholarship for society is that it gives us scientists, doctors, engineers, lawyers and many more professionals from backgrounds of limited means. Apart from filling positions that would have otherwise remained empty, having more people in these professions helps in building a better society.

A little extra work for attaining scholarships will go a long way as winning a scholarship will put you in close proximity to mentors who will help you get the maximum benefit of the program. Moreover, you’ll be able to network with people who have been awarded a similar scholarship in the same academic field.

And, of course, if you are one of those who need a scholarship, you must pick one carefully. For this, first, ensure that you meet the benchmark required. Never should you assume that because you are at a disadvantage, you won’t get the scholarship and simply don’t apply for it. It does you little harm to apply for a scholarship that you don’t receive than not applying for it altogether. Take your chance and apply, but only if need be.

These centers are places used to collect information, documents, and conduct one-on-one interviews with the applicants – all essential steps before the issuance of a visa. But with the centers being closed, there is a high possibility that students won’t be able to make it in time.

The closures have caused a big concern amongst the universities and students across the world, not just in India. Though many universities are pleading with government agencies to introduce flexibility around application and requesting opening of these centers, how soon that will be processed cannot be affirmed as of now.

Even if the centers were to be opened, in all likelihood, September intake would be affected, at least for sometime. This is so because Visa Application centers will have a huge backlog of applications to process, which may lead to further delays. Universities are well aware of the problem but, at the same time, incapable of giving a definitive answer. However, they will put in place a few relaxations, but again, they will have their limitations. And the longer the lockdown, the more difficult it will be. Therefore, it only makes sense to have a backup plan.

In this case, we have a few recommendations for you:

1. Apply from a Different Location – If you are a student residing in Delhi and Visa Application centers in Delhi are closed, we advise you to check out other metropolitan cities where the offices could be open. Cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Mumbai etc. have visa application centers. You may choose to apply for a visa from the most convenient city for you.

2. Start Online Classes with Your College – Universities are preparing themselves for eventualities wherein students are not able to reach campuses on time. Plans to introduce online classes are under consideration so that students may start their respective programs online before reaching the campus for a face-to-face learning experience, when the restrictions are more eased. Many colleges have declared that the coming semester would be largely taken online; however, students are advised to check with their respective universities whether such a provision is available or joining is necessary. You may choose to enroll for online classes now and reach the campus later when things open up.

3. Ask for Deferral – In the light of the pandemic, colleges have been hugely impacted by admissions of international students. There seems to be a big confusion whether students should enroll or put off college for a year by deferring. To have a clear picture, check with your university if they can delay your enrollment by a semester or maybe a year. Based on their flexibility, you can make your decision.

4. Drop the offer and try again next year – If none of the above alternatives work for you then the last option at best, is to drop the offer altogether and apply for admission the following year. But this would mean that the student would have to go through the entire application process all over again. And, in case you plan to take a gap year, you must spend it judiciously – by taking online courses, remote internships and volunteering work, etc. which could add value to your learning and help build your profile. FYI - Universities will refer to all the initiatives, courses and projects you have taken in the gap year before making their decision.

We understand that students want a transformative experience when it comes to studying abroad – you want to be challenged academically, stimulated to think constructively, stretch emotionally, experience life from a new perspective, and above all, build meaningful, life-long relationships hence, it’s pertinent that you take a decision that is most rewarding to you.

Courses such as Aerospace Engineering, Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics among many others fall under this domain though the full list is far more exhaustive. Speaking of a career path, while some of these subjects can offer a straightforward progression to a particular field, others might lead to revolutionizing the agricultural industry or the energy sector.

Due to the presence of most-revered universities and institutions for STEM courses in the US, a large number of international students, especially Indians, turn to the US to pursue them. Because certain research institutions provide openings for students to work simultaneously with their professors/instructors and implement their classroom learning in the laboratory/workshop, it has become the prime reason for attracting many aspirants. Taking any of the STEM courses from the US will be one the most important decisions of your life given that the US has been at the forefront of scientific and creative innovation for decades now.

And, if you are serious about getting any of the STEM degree, a few reasons below will help consolidate your decision for studying in the US:

1.Global Outlook – All international students studying in the US get a life-transforming experience unlike anywhere else, and it is mainly due to the open-minded culture that persists in the institutions and life in general. This adds to the students’ invaluable learning experience which makes them fit to find unique approaches to solving everyday problems, within community and work places. Moreover, interacting with the local student community is beneficial to both, the international students and the local students, in building a global network.

2.Thriving Diversity – Despite a large population of international students in the US, Indian students never feel out of place, it is more of a home away from home given a large population of Indian students studying in the US and the ones working and living there. Indian students can find just the right amount of familiarity when it comes to things Indian. Moreover, it’s a country that not just houses Indians but attracts a good amount of student pool from across the globe, making the country as the most diverse and liberal.

3.Active lifestyle – Undergraduates and post graduates in American universities do not have a dull moment. Given a wide range of activities to choose from, students are required to participate and engage actively in the areas of their interest. Students can get involved in sports, debates, concerts, societies, clubs and even volunteer in organizations to pursue community work.

4.Easy Access to Silicon Valley – Of the many reasons, the prime one for taking a STEM course from the US is, easy accessibility to Silicon Valley. It is no hidden fact that California aka ‘Silicon Valley’ is the technological hub, and due to this very reason, a big chunk of students are attracted to it, where new innovations are being made every day. Moreover, universities offer uninterrupted access to innovative companies and people building the latest and top-class technology. The students benefit enormously from interactions with these companies and have access to their cutting-edge resources.

And, last but not the least, students with STEM degrees are highly sought after as there is a growing demand for scientific thinkers and solution providers. STEM degrees from the US offer great opportunities for students not just in India and the US alone but, across the globe, as countries are constantly searching for a STEM workforce with a wide range of skills that are becoming increasingly important, not to mention the highest salaries that come from studying its disciplines.

International students who pursue a STEM degree are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment, which allows them to work in the US for up to 12 months. An added advantage of being a STEM major is that international students can then request to extend their OPT for 24 months.

Incapacity to handle too many things will be counter-productive hence refrain from it.

Schedule – A student active in sports or other extra-curricular activities may find it challenging to simultaneously meet the obligations of an AP class so, think cautiously before joining.

GPA should NOT be Compromised – No student is recommended to take an AP course if s/he thinks it might lower the overall GPA. While the admissions team wants to see how a student performs in taxing courses, their priority is to see strong grades. Under no circumstances should a student compromise with his/her GPA scores.

It is to be noted by students that you can get access to the complete list of AP courses at The College Board website. Students can also ask their school counsellors about AP classes available at school and can choose to take two to five AP classes during their high school years. However, looking at the depth and intensiveness of the course, the student should take no more than two AP courses per year. Striking a balance between work and play is essential. Taking too many classes can scuttle your social life and cause extreme anxiety, which we certainly do not want.

High AP score (anything between 3-5) might exempt you from certain general education or prerequisite classes. However, exemptions depend from college to college, as receiving a 3 on your AP Chemistry might qualify you at some schools, while others might require a 5. Thus, go through the website of the schools you are applying, to understand their eligibility criterion before enrolling in AP classes.

Well, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, given the pressure you children deal with preparing for your board exams. However, don’t let sloth get the better of you, rather utilize the spare time in your hands in building your profile, a profile that your dream college cannot ignore.

With the phenomenal growth of students applying to study abroad, the competition is only getting tougher by the day. Thereby, it not only makes sense to work on your profile to distinguish yourself from your peers but is a must if you are intent on getting into your dream college.

Students are advised to take into cognizance that colleges abroad don’t solely rely on academic percentages but will look at the students’ achievements outside of school to determine their caliber and ability to succeed in tough environments. While it’s imperative that you spend that extra time more judiciously, taking the help of education counsellors, especially those dealing in overseas education, can help identify gaps in your profile. These counsellors, having years of experience, stand by to give you step-by-step information on how you can boost your profile and become individuals ready to meet the rigors of college life.

However, here is a list of things you must undertake for a spectacular resume.

1. Prepare for Standardized Tests – Though exams for SAT may have been cancelled for now, it is always a good idea to stay prepared. Make a study plan and continue to practice for about 30 minutes per day to keep your skills sharp. Also ensure to devote ample time for your English Proficiency Tests such as TOEFL/IELTS. What you choose to study is as crucial as your daily practice. To be precise, study what you need to, rather than what you want to. Most importantly, create a schedule and stick to it.

2. Take up Online Courses – Learning is a continuous process and students making extra efforts on gaining new skills are always given preference over those who don’t. From courses on AI, Machine Learning and Data Science to Painting and Drawing, there is no dearth of courses to choose from. However, it is always advisable to choose a course that is relevant to you, do not pursue a course because someone else is doing it. Take online classes on the subject of your interest, it could be related to the subject you are aiming to study abroad or something related to your hobby. If you are aiming for a particular school, it will be a good idea to check out if the school offers any online course that matches your interests; learning from them will fetch you brownie points during application. Certifications from reputed institutions not only give you an understanding of the kind of materials you’d be dealing in at college, they also authenticate your current knowledge on the subject.

3. Engage in Extra-curricular Activities – In the light of the pandemic, it becomes a little difficult to take up outdoor sports but, don’t let that hamper your involvement in the game. If you are interested and keen on developing your skills further, you may want to try out Esports. Well, it’s not just sports we can be a part of these days, with the plethora of options out there, one can try hands at learning musical instruments, clay modelling, dancing and various other kinds of arts. It surely is a good time to get back to the long-lost hobby or something you had been meaning to do. Upgrading your skills or learning a new activity indicates your inquisitiveness and drive to thrive. Moreover, the longer you are involved in an activity, the better, it shows dedication and perseverance.

4. Take Internships or Freelancing Work –Internships are very popular amongst students these days. You may choose to work full-time or part-time at a certain company for a specified period of time. This shall allow you to gain valuable work or research experience which will certainly prove useful in higher education. On-the-job training in the field of your interest will provide a picture of day-to-day duties of what you would be doing in later years, but if you have not taken the experience in the field of your choice even then, the gained exposure will provide you hands-on knowledge on the operations and functions involved in a corporate house which is unlikely in a classroom setting. So, go out there as every experience counts.

Freelancing is another option available to students. One can choose to build a website or an app from the comfort of his/her home or write articles for companies, NGOs or publishing houses. You may even start a blog if you wish on the subject that intrigues you. The idea is get involved outside of class, have something to showcase your life beyond textbooks.

5. Volunteer –Being part of your community reveals your humane side. Students actively engaged in solving the problems of issues and concerns that bothers them highlights their quality as problem-solvers. Volunteering at NGOs is usually the most preferable place since there is no intent of monetary ambitions involved. There are old age homes, orphanages, juvenile correction centers, etc. where students can render their services to help and uplift the underprivileged. Such projects are an interesting way for you to connect with people from different backgrounds and circumstances. Becoming contributing members of the society helps inform the admission team that you have a knack for solving problems and are an initiative taker.

6. Maintain Excellent Academic Performance –Last but not the least, maintaining your scores goes without saying. Meeting the basic criterion will get the attention your profile seeks. Though students may go a little easy during XI grade yet, make sure that your performance doesn’t fall too low. A drop of about 10-15 percent is acceptable but more than that may raise the eyebrows of the admissions committee. Try to maintain consistency in the scores.

All these pointers above collectively make for a very solid profile. So, instead of whiling away all your free time surfing the net or watching unnecessary shows on OTT platforms, try and allocate your time to the activities that are going to be beneficial for your growth. By all means watch your favorite show just ensure that you put a cap on the time you spend on it per day. And why shouldn’t you when the US offers the most prestigious and competitive universities of the world. It is not only reasonable for any highly aspiring student to nurture his/her desire of attending an American college, but the most logical decision in this era of cut-throat competition. However, it can be an expensive dream since the tuition fee shoots through the roof, especially for international students. Having said that, it does not mean quality education is accessible only to people with deep pockets. Trust that a student belonging to a middle-class family, too, can avail the benefits of the dynamic education, and that also for free, yes you read that right, for free. Here are a few things you need to keep in mind and the steps you must take to study in the US universities for free.

1. Academic Competency - The first and foremost criterion that the admission officers would take into account would be your academic competency. This means that your previous academic record (for IX, X, XI Grade) has to be exemplary to make it stand out among the thousands of applications. Therefore, studying hard and establishing a robust academic profile should be on top of your list among other things. Your GPA, SAT/GRE Test score, TOEFL/IELTS (English language proficiency test), along with Extracurriculars shall collectively help you get that admission and also provide you the opportunity to study in the USA for free.

In addition to the above requisites of an outstanding academic profile, you must prepare all your documents and application requirements way before the deadline. Try to submit your application as early as possible as, this will give your application a better chance at getting noticed by the admission team. Thus under all circumstances, avoid submitting your application just before the deadline to avoid any last-minute hassles.

2. Scholarships - Bear in mind that colleges and universities in the US offer scholarships for international students. Studying abroad can be financially draining for many students but, don’t let that come in the way of achieving your dreams. Be assured that with the help of various scholarship opportunities from the universities, private institutions and government organizations, attaining your degree from the US for free is absolutely possible. However, scholarship providers are very selective, that's why you need to have and present an outstanding profile. You can apply for as many scholarships as you possibly can to increase your chances of acceptance. All you have to do is to ensure that you meet the parameters mentioned above.

While the tuition cost can be taken care of through scholarships, you would have to bear the living and other miscellaneous expenses for the duration of your stay there.

3. Aim for Affordable Colleges – US has plenty of affordable colleges/universities to choose from that offer high-quality curriculum for higher education. Choosing universities that have cheaper tuition fees can lift off the burden from your shoulders and help you manage other finances better. Since you won’t be paying the tuition cost, you could use the expendable finances to pursue things of your interest, for example, explore the city.

Besides you study for free in the US, you could also soak in the American culture by visiting its numerous tourist spots, national parks; taste its cuisine; experience music; and enjoy the festivals to have a more lively and vibrant stay.

The test takers are tested on four skill sets, namely – Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing - which in essence are core elements of any language.

Many students, despite attaining education in English medium schools, are intimidated by the test, but let me assure you that with a few simple steps, students or for that matter anyone can ace the test with flying colors.

Follow 6 Simple Steps to Ace the TOEFL or IELTS Test:

1. Know the Pattern:The pattern of each test is different. Though, you are required to appear for all the skill sets – Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing – the pattern of each section is way different than the other. The number of questions and type of questions are also very different for all the sections. Therefore, familiarity with the structure, types of questions and knowing how you need to proceed efficiently is of prime importance. Moreover, since each section is allotted a specific time, the test taker is expected to finish within that time frame. And no, there is no facility of taking more time in one section and adjusting it in the next, so, learn to maintain a pace wherein you can attempt all questions correctly within the timeframe assigned.

2. Take at least a month to prepare:If your English language skills are good then we’d suggest you give a month to prepare yourself. However, if English is not your forte, we’d recommend you to take anything between 2-3 months. In the first week, attempt individual sections, then move on to completing two sections together, and from the 3rd week onwards you should complete all four sections in one go (You can get free Practice Tests on Khan Academy). Once you get the hang of practicing all sections, start giving mock-tests. During your preparation you must give at least 4 mock-tests, 1 every fourth day starting the fourth week, and keep track of your progress.

3. Read the Questions Carefully:Often students don’t read questions carefully and lose out on easy answers. These careless mistakes can cost marks. To minimize damage, underline key words in the question to keep track of what you need to do and what kind of an answer you are looking for. Do not rush the question. Read and respond carefully before moving on to the next question.

4. Make Note of Repeated Mistakes:When you give the mock tests, make sure to note the mistakes you are committing. Sometimes some students keep repeating their mistakes, without noticing that they are making the same ones over and over. The idea of taking mock tests is to identify if there are any recurrent errors. Learning from your mistakes and rectifying errors will help you scale up your scores. A good way for avoiding such errors is to find the reason for each incorrect answer. Knowing the reasons will keep you away from replicating mistakes.

5. Read, Listen and Watch English News and Channels: While you are preparing for the test, it is essential that you read as much as you can. Inculcating reading habits will change your thought process, empower you with more vocabulary to express yourself and help you understand a variety of texts, academic and non-academic. Listening to and watching English News or Movies or Series will further enhance your skills. Choose programs or series of your interest as they would hold your attention and compel you to understand the topic in discussion. Till the time you are done with your test do not waste time on any other language.

6. Practice, Practice and Practice:There is no alternate to practice; and hence the more you practice the better you shall become. Practicing the same types of questions over and over empowers you with the ability to quickly spot answers. Also, once you know the pattern and have been practicing it for a while makes it easier to identify what you are looking for.

You must take into account that the level of language used in these tests is similar to the level you will get in an academic setting in universities abroad. Thus, you must take the practice tests as a foundational experience, which will prepare and equip you to handle college level education.

Be assured, if you follow these 6 simple rules, you can clear the TOEFL/IELTS test with flying colors. Not only this, the variety of questions that you will practice during the one-month period will stimulate your cerebral juices so much so that you will find a new control over all your subjects. So, what are you waiting for? …… Get Started!
